      North Adams is the Place

Welcome to the City of North Adams, a community with a rich history and a bright future. Our city offers an unparalleled combination of natural beauty and outdoor recreation, world class art and culture, and a great public liberal arts college - and the entrepreneurial and innovation spirit to make the most of these resources and amenities.

That spirit is the source of our greatest strength as a community. It is evident in pride that those of us who call North Adams home feel in our city. It is apparent in the experience of visitors for whom North Adams is a destination for tourism and discovery. It is implicit in our commitment to promote and achieve sustainable economic development and growth for the benefit of everyone in North Adams.

In service to that commitment our City has the responsibility - and the ability - to provide effective, efficient, and responsive public services to residents and visitors alike.

City of North Adams Zoning Update Project
The zoning ordinance outlines regulations and standards governing the use of land, buildings, and structures in the City of North Adams, with a focus on serving the general interests of public health, safety and welfare for residents and visitors. It is intended to support the protection and enhancement of the City's existing character and as well as to support future growth. The citys Vision 2030 comprehensive plan, adopted in 2014, included an action item to update the city zoning code. Building on preliminary efforts to update the zoning use table, city staff worked with representatives from the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission (BRPC) to conduct a comprehensive review of and revision to the zoning map and related tables. These efforts were informed by input from the community including at public meetings held in August 2018 and May 2019, as well as in presentations to the North Adams Planning Board and City Council. This process of public input has provided opportunity for community members to learn about the process as well as to offer questions and concerns, and this feedback has contributed directly and effectively to the ongoing development of the updating zoning materials.
